MORE VEHICLES ON EXPRESSWAYS SINCE DAWN SATURDAY AS EID RUSH BEGINS

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 (Bernama) -- As city folk begin leaving for their respective villages and towns in conjunction with the Aidilfitri (Eid) next week, a highway authority reports more vehicles on the expressways since dawn on Saturday.

According to the Plus Expressways traffic control centre, vehicles were moving slowly along several stretches of the North-South Expressway.

A spokesman told Bernama the traffic situation was under control.

A Plus traffic twitter feed reported that accidents along several stretches caused vehicles to slow down.

However, no lanes were closed due to the accidents, it said.

In Kangar town, capital of northern state of Perlis, an operation was carried out to inspect express buses.

Perlis Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Zulhasmi Mohamad said that under a road safety campaign in view of the Aidilfitri (Eid), two JPJ officers
would pose as bus passengers to ensure proper conduct of the express bus drivers.

These officers would record the traffic offences of the drivers and issue summonses on the spot, he said. The move by the JPJ is also to cut down number of traffic accidents during festive season.
