Sharjah Port inferno contained

Sharjah Sep. 21, 2008 (WAM) - Firemen and civil defence and emergency personnel from Sharjah, UAE Armed Forces, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Umm Al-Qaiwain joined forces in the early hours of Saturday and contained a massive fire which broke out at the storage and dispatch area of an edible oil manufacturing company in Khalid Port area, Sharjah, in the early hours of today Saturday.

The raging fire which started at the premises of Emirates Oil Refining Company (ERCO) in the Industrial Area of the Port was reported at 2:27 AM to the Operations Room at Sharjah Police who immediately cordoned off the area and ushered fire engines and ambulances into the scene sending flames dozens of metres high.

The fire completely destroyed the storage facility of ERCO that mainly produces sunflower oil. Storage units of inflammable materials caught the fire which destroyed all the machines.

Teams were fighting to prevent the fire from reaching to surrounding warehouses and factories and sea fire fighting units at Khalid Port tried to control the fire from the sea and prevent it from reaching oil storage units.

The personnel of more than 50 civil defence units of the Ministry of Interior excreted huge efforts to cool oil tanks and prevent high temperature from starting serial fires.

Sharjah Police Chief Brigadier Hamid Mohammed Al-Hudaidi who is commanding the operations at the scene said an investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire.

Two firemen and a worker sustained minor suffocation injuries and were treated at the scene, according to Al-Hudaidi.

He called on owners of surrounding factories at the Port to comply with safety precautions and safe storage measures to avoid "such disastrous accidents which wreak havoc upon public properties." He further warned against randomly storing inflammable materials, oil and chemicals.
