Asia-Pacific Classic 2011 is an excellent example and the pinnacle of this
aspiration, said Najib Tun Razak.

The prime minister said Malaysia was rapidly emerging as Asia's leading golf
destination, with over 207 golf facilities in the country representing an

The prime minister said the Ministry of Tourism undertook an evaluation of
last year's event and had expressed significant enthusiasm in extending support
towards the development of a long-term and sustainable programme aimed at
developing golf in Malaysia.

"I encourage local industry players to work with the promoters to offer
creative packages that attract foreign golfers to Malaysia to experience not

Najib said Malaysia was in a unique position to spearhead the development of

More importantly, he said, Malaysia represented the cornerstone of the Asean
region as a gateway to Asia's heritage, hospitality and culture.

"Not only do we have world-class golf facilities but we also possess the
tourism infrastructure and the cultural heritage to complement a golfing
experience like no other.

"It is our pride and privilege to play host to numerous and diverse
world-class sporting events and we have no doubt that we will continue to excel
as the region's foremost destination for professional golf," he said.

The prime minister said the PGA Tour's sanctioning of the event elevated its
profile and enhanced Malaysia's standing as a destination for major sporting
events in the region.

"Having witnessed the overwhelming success of its inaugural event that
received over 1,457 hours of broadcast in 29 languages to a global audience in
over 500 million households.

"The CIMB Asia-Pacific Classic 2011 will continue to receive our steadfast
support especially in working with the PGA Tour as it continues its seven year
commitment in establishing the event as well as elevating the standard of
professional golf and golf itself in Malaysia to new heights," he added.
