Iranian calligrapher to join 2012 Sharjah Biennial jury
TEHRAN, Sept.7(MNA) -- Iranian calligrapher Israfil Shirchi has been officially invited to join the jury of the 2012 Sharjah Biennial.
Other jury members are coming from United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and probably Turkey, Shirchi told on Tuesday.
Since its inception in 1993, the event has formed a cultural bridge between artists, art institutions and organizations locally, regionally and internationally.
Shirchi said that prominent artists have been taking part in the event over the past years, adding that Iranian artist Hossein Khosrojerdi had participated in the biennial some years ago and received one of the awards.
Shirchi also talked about the significant position of calligraphy and Persian calligraphy painting and said, “The oriental aspect of Persian calligraphy has long been of high importance. The world is attracted to the mythical rhythm and flow of Persian inscriptions.
“The West regards the nastaliq style of calligraphy very beautiful and charming, bearing the Persian spirit and civilization,” he highlighted.
He also said that the biennial is a major event searching for bright artistic talents.
The 10th edition of Sharjah Biennial, which ran from March 16 to May 16 2011 was managed by curators Suzanne Cotter, Rasha Salti, and Haig Aivazian.
Shirchi was born in 1962 in Babol, Mazandaran Province. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Tehran. His artworks have been shown in over 30 solo and 60 joint exhibits in Iran and several other countries including Germany, India, China, the United States and Ukraine.
