MERCY MALAYSIA TO SEND SECOND TEAM TO SOMALIA
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) will send its second humanitarian aid and relief mission to Somalia before the end of the year.
Its president, Dr Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus, said the team was originally scheduled to leave for Mogadishu on Sept 10 but Mercy Malaysia decided to postpone the trip following the shooting death of BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor in the famine-stricken country last week.
He told a press conference here today that Mercy Malaysia had planned to send its second team with those of the Perdana Global Peace Foundation and other international organisations, including the United Nations and Muslim Aid.
"We decided to review the date ... but we will send the second team before the end of the year," he said.
Mercy Malaysia had sent its three-man assessment team to the country on Aug 25 and they are expected to return on Saturday.
Asked whether Mercy Malaysia would include journalists in its second mission, Dr Ahmad Faizal said they had yet to discuss it.
"We are not talking about a large number, only an optimum group which can work and be mobile in case of an emergency. Usually, it is five to seven people depending on the need.
"However, we will only bring along experienced volunteers who have had exposure in conflict zones. For those without enough experience, we will provide ample training," he said.
Meanwhile, Mercy Malaysia's vice-president Dr Mohamed Ikram Mohamed Salleh said its second mission needed RM600,000 (US$201,240) to run three projects, namely food distribution to 1,000 internally displaced persons (IDP), therapeutic feeding programme for children, and a mobile clinic.
He explained that Mercy Malaysia also needed some RM2 million to generate a long-term project, including the rehabilitation of maternal child health centres, to set up more therapeutic feeding programmes with local partners and hygiene-promotion programmes.
