Maliki’s office: Kuwaiti PM expresses regret over what happened to the Iraqi fishermen recently

Baghdad (NINA) – Kuwaiti Prime Minister, Sheikh Nasir Al Ahmed Al Sabah, expressed regret to Iraqi Prime Minister “over what happened to the Iraqi fishermen recently.”

A statement issued by the Iraqi Premier’s office mentioned that Nouri Al Maliki received a phone call from his Kuwaiti counterpart in which he stressed “Kuwait’s desire to increase cooperation and coordination with Iraq, especially on the marine forces level to avoid such incidents.”

Both sides stressed the “necessity of the continuation of dialogue to maintain the positive atmospheres between the two countries.”

A Kuwaiti marine patrol arrested an Iraqi fishing boat in the Iraqi territorial waters on the second of this month in Faw (120km southern Basra) and took 12 Iraqi fishermen to unknown destination before releasing them later.

Officials in Basra said that the fishermen were assaulted and cursed by the Kuwaitis.
