Gargash hails the strong cooperation between UAE and UN in combating proliferation of WMD
Abu Dhabi, Sep 22, 2008 (WAM) - Minister of State for Foreign Affairs HE DR. Anwar Gargash hailed the strong cooperation between UAE and the United Nations in relation to the international efforts for combating proliferation of the weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
He added that the UAE is one among those countries at the forefront in the region in implementing several measures to ban the spread of WMD. Among these measures are the establishment of a task force to block the spread of WMD in the country, as per an ordinance (2005) by Interior Minister Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who asserted unconditional cooperation with all concerned local and international authorities for combating WMD spread. He also assured to work to ensure that UAE doesn't become a party in the spread of the weapons of mass destruction, and introduced regulations on the import, export and re-export of dual-use commodities.
Among these measures were the promulgation of the Law No.13 controlling export, import and re-export of dual-use commodities, and stipulating stringent punishments for those who trade in those commodities, technologies or equipments.
It is worth mentioning that several local and federal authorities in UAE like customs and free zones work to ensure proper implementation of the international laws banning the spread of the weapons of mass destruction.
These authorities have set up meticulous mechanisms for proper investigation and scrutiny of goods with the help of competent personnel who are well trained in the field of non-proliferation of WMD. This keenness stems out of the country's responsibility towards the international community in this regard, as well as its commitment to the implementation of the related international conventions.
The Minister made his statement shortly before the UN General Assembly meeting, to assure that UAE fully comprehend the fact that, to give support to the efforts for combating spread of WMD is the basic way for containing it.
