US International Religious Freedom Report 2008 praises UAE
WAM Abu Dhabi, Sept 22, 2008 (WAM) - The US International Religious Freedom Report 2008, released by the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, commends the policy of religious tolerance adopted by the UAE leadership toward non-Muslim religious groups.
It cited the organisation by the Centre of Information Affairs of an event that reflected the improvements and positive developments in respect for religious freedom. The Report says, "On May 17, 2008, the Media Affairs Centre of the Deputy Prime Minister's Office organised a symposium entitled ‘The Role of the Vatican in Promoting Coexistence around the World, and the Reality of Religious Tolerance in UAE.' The symposium hosted two speakers--Apostolic Vicar of Arabia and Bishop of Abu Dhabi Paul Hinder, and Archbishop Paul-Mounged El Hachem, Apostolic Nuncio to the country--who discussed religious tolerance in the country and the history of the relationship between Christians and Muslims."
It is worth noting that the Centre of Information Affairs had organised a symposium on ‘The Role of the Vatican in Promoting Coexistence around the World, and the Reality of Religious Tolerance in UAE,' in which it affirmed that the UAE under its wise leadership adopts human communication and cultural dialogue as strong underpinnings of peaceful and stable coexistence between different faiths and races living in the country.
The Centre had also organised another symposium on "Islamic-Christian Coexistence between Reality and Ambition," in which HE Father Hanna Kildani, Secretary General of the Christian schools in Jordan, paid tribute to the wise leadership of President HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and his efforts in supporting openness and human co-existence between the different religions and nationalities in the UAE.
He pointed out, in this symposium, that HH Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been eager to build man who is open to the other, and to promote the values of mutual respect and equality. Father Kildani considered this to be the fruits of the state's orientation toward spreading tolerance and promoting the spirit of love and friendship in UAE.
