EXHIBITION OF SARIS FROM PRIVATE COLLECTION AT MUSEUM

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 8 (Bernama) -- An exhibition of saris from the private
collection of the Indian community is being held at the Saindera Gallery of the
Textile Museum here.

In all, 63 saris are displayed of various types of fabric and design at the
"Dream of the Drape" exhibition which began Wednesday and ends on Sunday.

The exhibition also traces the history of the sari and explains the
philosophy behind the traditional attire, Malaysian Museums Department
director-general Ibrahim Ismail said.

"There is meaning in the type of fabric used, the way the sari is tied and
its length, which vary from four to nine metres," he told reporters here.

All this and more would be covered by Prof Dr Aruna Gopinath in her talk on
Saturday and Sunday, which would be followed by a sari fashion show, Ibrahim
said.

The museum will next hold an exhibition of woven fabric from the Sumba
Island from Sept 15 to Oct 23.

"The woven Sumba fabric is very highly regarded world-wide. It is similar to
the Pua Kumbu (multi-coloured ceremonial cotton cloth used by the Ibans) from
Sarawak. The difference is in the motif," Ibrahim said.
