PROF S JAYAKUMAR RESIGNS FROM SINGAPORE'S PRESIDENTIAL COUNCIL FOR MINORITY RIGHTS
SINGAPORE, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- Professor S Jayakumar has resigned as a
permanent member of the Singapore Presidential Council for Minority Rights,
effective Thursday.
In accepting his resignation, Chairman of the Council, Chief Justice Chan
Sek Keong, expressed his thanks to Professor Jayakumar for "his invaluable
contributions and strong support of the Council's work despite his heavy
commitments", according to an official statement from the Presidential Council
for Minority Rights here.
Prof Jayakumar was appointed a permanent member of the Council on July 1,
1998 when he was the Minister for Law.
He retired from the government and politics earlier this year after 31
years.
Prof Jayakumar entered the Parliament in 1980 as Member of Parliament for
Bedok, which later became part of East Coast Group Representative Constituency
and had served in several key Ministries - Home Affairs, Law and Foreign
Affairs, later as Deputy Prime Minister and Senior Minister.
