Pakistan promises anti-terror campaign along Iran’s borders

TEHRAN, Sept. 10 (MNA) – Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said his country is determined to launch a campaign against terrorism and extremism especially along its common border with Iran.

Gilani made the remarks during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Islamabad on Thursday which was held on the sidelines of the 18th session of the Iran-Pakistan Joint Economic Commission.

He also emphasized the importance of Iran-Pakistan ties and pointed to the historical affinities between the two countries and their positive effects on mutual cooperation.

He went on to say that the development of the private sectors of the two countries would guarantee the implementation of the agreements signed by the senior officials of the two countries.

Gilani is scheduled to pay a visit to Tehran in the near future at the invitation of Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi.

In the meeting, Salehi also conveyed the greetings of Rahimi to Gilani and briefed him on the plans that the two countries agreed to implement in the framework of the joint economic commission.

During his remarks, Salehi commented on the efforts made by the Islamic Republic to provide adequate facilities for both public and private sectors and emphasized the necessity of modifying the rules and regulations of the two countries to pave the way for expansion of mutual cooperation.

In a separate meeting with Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar late on Thursday, Salehi said regional problems should be resolved through regional solutions. Salehi said the intervention of extra-regional countries is detrimental to security and development of the countries in the region.

In the meeting, the two sides discussed the latest developments in bilateral relations and emphasized the necessity for promotion of mutual cooperation in all areas.

Salehi also held another separate meeting with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in Karachi late on Thursday.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed bilateral relations and the main regional and international developments.
