‘Iran reserves right to defend itself against any aggression’
TEHRAN, Sept. 10 (MNA)--Iran reserves the right to defend itself against any attack, the country’s ambassador to the United Nations said in a letter to the UN leaders.
Ambassador Mohammad Khazaee wrote the letter in response to anti-Iran remarks by French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
Sarkozy said last week that Iran’s military, nuclear and ballistic ambitions constitute a growing threat that may lead to a preventive attack against Iranian sites that would provoke a major crisis that France wants to avoid at all costs.
In his letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Security Council President Nawaf Salam and UN General Assembly President Joseph Deiss, Ambassador Khazaee said, “Once again, I emphasize that the Islamic Republic of Iran has no intention whatsoever to attack other countries. However, considering the inalienable right based on the Article 51 of UN charter, it is allowed to have defense equipment for defending itself against any aggression to its soil and people.”
Khazaee called Sarkozy’s statement “inflammatory” and “baseless”.
The diplomat reiterated Tehran’s position that “Iran is a leading nation in rejecting and opposing all kinds of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear weapons.”
He expressed Iran’s concern over and opposition to such “provocative, unexplainable and irresponsible remarks”.
These remarks constitute a blatant violation of the UN Charter and the international law and impede global efforts to promote regional and global peace and security.
