NAM approves statement in support of Iran’s nuclear program

TEHRAN, Sept. 11 (MNA) -- The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states approved a statement in support of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s peaceful nuclear program on Friday.

The statement will be read out at the next meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by Egypt’s envoy to the IAEA, Ihab Fawzi.

In its statement, NAM hailed Iran’s invitation to IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards Herman Nackaerts to visit the country’s nuclear facilities as a confidence-building measure.

Nackaerts visited Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, the enrichment facilities in Natanz and Fordo, the nuclear fuel rods production factory in Isfahan, as well as the heavy water reactor in Arak.

The next meeting of the Board of Governors will be held on September 12 at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna.

In June 2010, the UN Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions on Iran under intense pressure from the United States and its allies, which claim Tehran’s nuclear program may have potential military aspects.

However, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear sites but has never found any evidence of diversion to weapons production.

On September 5, Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Director Fereydoun Abbasi said that Tehran is ready to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to fully supervise Iran’s nuclear facilities for five years if the sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic are lifted.

Iran says that as a member of the IAEA and a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, it has every right to use nuclear energy for electricity generation and medical applications.
