PORTAL TO BOOST SARAWAK TOURISM

KUCHING, Sept 12 (Bernama) -- Local and foreign tourists could now obtain
the latest information on the Sarawak tour packages and travel products at
competitive prices by surfing Borneo Tourism Alliance (BTA) e-Community portal
at www.borneotourismalliance.com.

Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI) Jacob
Dangau Sagan said the idea of creating a portal was raised in the transformation
of Sarawak laboratory organised by MITI in Kuching on July 12 to 14.

"Small and medium entrepreneurs would stand to gain much benefits from the
portal which is operated by BTA, a tourism industry voluntary organisation," he
told reporters after a hari raya Aidilfitri open house and the launching of the
e-Community portal in Santubong Homestay, 35k from here Sunday.

Sarawak Minister of Tourism and Heritage Abang Johari Tun Openg
officiated both the events.

Jacob said the website contained among others information on homestay
operators, tour agents and promotional services as well as local handicraft
entrepreneurs.

Jacob said eight potential tourism initiatives in Sarawak proposed in
laboratory included health tourism, education tourism, eco-tourism hub, sports
tourism, homestay, cultural and environment tourism, tourism real estate and
tourism infrastructure.

"It is projected that the eight initiatives would enable Sarawak to generate
RM68.3 million with employment opportunities for 1,500 by 2020," he said.

Meanwhile, BTA in a statement said the e-Community portal would provide a
platform to customers on information direct from Sarawak tourism entrepreneurs
on a business to customer as well as building strategic networking on business
to business with other entrepreneurs.

BTA also ensures that the portal would be upgraded for better interactive
response and more user friendly in future.

The membership of BTA is now covers various parties in the tourism sector
comprising representatives from the state goverment and private sector.
