MALAYSIAN GOV'T WILL PROVIDE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR PERDANA UNIVERSITY STUDENTS - PM NAJIB

SERDANG (Malaysia), Sept 12 (Bernama) -- The government will be providing
scholarships to Malaysian students selected to pursue their medical training at
both Perdana University medical schools here, said Prime Minister Najib Tun
Razak.

The scholarships were both for the students of Perdana University Graduate
School of Medicine (PUGSOM) and the Perdana University-Royal College of Surgeons
in Ireland (PU-RSCI) School of Medicine.

In his speech, Najib said the presence of the university would help put
Malaysia on the map for world class medical education, research and care.

"I hope that, as the University endeavours to establish itself as a
world-class education-research-healthcare hub - it will also strive to forge
links with local institutions and our local talent pool," he said at the
launching of the Perdana University, here Monday.

Former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad was also named the
university's first chancellor Monday.

The first intake, comprising 105 students, will begin their session at their
temporary facilities at the Mardi headquarters today while waiting for the
completion of the construction of the campus proper in 2013.

PUGSOM is offering, for the first time in Malaysia, a four-year graduate
entry programme based on the United States curriculum in collaboration with the
Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Meanwhile, PU-RCSI School of Medicine will offer a five-year programme based
on a conventional curriculum in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons
in Ireland.

Najib said the new university, a far-sighted collaboration between the
government's public-private partnership concept and the corporate sector, was
something of a landmark for Malaysia.

"I am incredibly excited about it and I have no doubt that it will pay
dividends in the widest possible sense over the years - educating and developing
a new generation of medical professionals and equipping them with the skills and
expertise to respond to the healthcare needs of our growing global population,"
he said.

The prime minister said there was no doubt that Perdana University would be
an amazing facility, boasting two medical schools, Malaysia's first private
teaching hospital with 600 multi-specialty beds and a new Life Sciences Research
Centre to keep the country at the cutting edge of clinical research.

He said the planned Perdana University Teaching Hospital was set to open in
2013 by the time today's students reached their clinical years and would be
managed by Johns Hopkins Medicine International.

"Offering state-of-the art diagnostic and treatment facilities, it will be a
prominet player in Malaysia's drive towards medical tourism, a model for 21st
century personalised medicine and ultimately an international symbol of
healtcare excellence," he added.

Meanwhile, Perdana University's Chairman of the Board of Governors, Tan Sr i
Dr Mohan Swami said half of the students would be JPA scholars.

Also present was Dr Mahathir's wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali.
