CUT-AND-PASTE CULTURE CAN CAUSE PUBLIC EXPOSURE TO WRONG HISTORICAL FACTS

KUANTAN (Malaysia), Sept 12 (Bernama) -- The cut-and-paste culture from inauthentic sources, particularly through the Internet, could cause the public to be exposed to wrong historical facts, said historian Prof Dr Ramlah Adam.

She said the public, especially the younger generation, should be reading history books written by credible authors to understand and obtain accurate information on the country's history, rather than refer to unqualified writers
through the Internet.

"Do not practise the paste-and-cut culture and then blame the government after getting erroneous information, and hence not understanding history," she said at a forum organised by the Pahang government in conjunction with Malaysia's 54th independence anniversary, here, Monday.

The forum chaired by Pahang Education Department director Mazlan
Mohamad, also had two other panel speakers, Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (now known as Bursa Malaysia) former president Mohd Salleh Majid and former Pahang state assembly Speaker Mohd Khairuddin Mohd Kawi.

Also present was Pahang Chief Minister Adnan Yaakob.

Ramlah said history could only be written with evidence and indepth research and not based on assumptions.

She said academicians like her noted every fact and incident without altering them, different from some politicians who took brief facts and treated them as historical records.

Ramlah also refuted the claim by some quarters that she was paid by certain parties to record history.

"I have never received any allocation from any political party to write history. Instead, my research was done through the university," said Ramlah of UiTM's Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies.
