WORK ON MELAKA'S FIRST 'RESORT HOSPITAL' BEGINS

MELAKA, Sept 14 (Bernama) -- Work on a RM150 million (US$48.75
million)specialist 'resort hospital' in the state has begun in Ayer Keroh.

Hospital Pakar Hang Tuah, to be built by Sarawak-based property developer Anggun Diversified on a 1.6-hectare site, is scheduled for completion in 2013 and will be able to attract medical tourists to the state, says chief minister Mohd. Ali Rustam.

"The construction of the 'Resort Hospital' will comprise two phases with the first being the building for the specialist hospital at a cost of RM150 million while the second phase involves the building of health facilities and infrastructure at a cost of RM100 million (US$48.75 million)," he told reporters at the ground breaking ceremony for the hospital at Jalan Botanikal, Ayer Keroh here on Wednesday.

Mohd Ali said the 13-storey hospital will have 150 rooms and 390 beds while the 10-storey five-star resort will have 500 rooms.

Of the 35 private hospitals offering health tourism services in the country, three are in Melaka, he said.

"Health tourism is currently the best tourist package in Melaka with an average of 11,000 patients a month seeking such services, mainly from Indonesia," he said.
