BID TO SMUGGLE 200 COOKING GAS TANKS FOILED
TAWAU (Sabah, Malaysia), Sept 14 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime
Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here foiled an attempt on Tuesday to smuggle two hundred 14-kg cylinders of cooking gas to Pulau Sebatik, an island just off the eastern coast of the East Malaysia state of Sabah.
Tawau MMEA enforcement chief, (maritime) commander Azman Samsudin, said the cylinders were seized from a boat going from here to Kampung Mentadak Baru on the island at about 4.30 pm.
The skipper of the boat, a 16-year-old boy, and a 20-year-old Indonesian crew member were held for questioning, he said.
The Indonesian had on him an illegal immigrant registration slip, he added.
While the northern part of the island belongs to Sabah, the southern part belongs to East Kalimantan, Indonesia. At its closest point, it is just about a kilometre from the Borneo mainland.
