Turkish PM plans to visit Iran: report
TEHRAN, Sept.17(MNA) – Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that he plans to pay a visit to Iran in the near future, according to Turkish media.
Erdogan made the announcement in an interview with reporters in Tunisia on Thursday.
Erdogan’s visit to Tehran will be important as Turkey has agreed to host an early warning radar as part of NATO’s missile defense system, which is ostensibly meant to counter an alleged ballistic missile threat from Iran. The decision has caused tension in relations between the two countries.
Erdogan also said that he may hold talks with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, which opened in New York on September 13, 2011.
He added that Hakan Fidan, the director of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization, will visit Iran in the near future.
Elsewhere in the interview, Erdogan said that Turkish officials are in talks with Iranian officials on the developments occurring in the region, the situation in Syria, and the fight against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
Asked about the cooperation between Tehran and Ankara in fight against the PKK, he stated that the two countries are cooperating well on the issue and may launch a joint operation against the PKK in the Qandil Mountains.
