GENERATE BETTER IDEAS TO KEEP AUDIENCE, MALAYSIA STATE BRODCASTER TOLD
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim has urged state-owned broadcaster Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) to generate innovative ideas to sustain audience loyalty, saying this would enable it to face stiff competition in the broadcasting world.
"New as well as contemporary approaches acceptable to the audience,
particularly young people, are needed," he said when closing the Minnal FM Merdeka Expedition and launching the Minnal FM Fans Club here on Friday.
His speech was read by his deputy Senator Maglin Dennis D'Cruz.
Rais said the expedition was the best strategy in an effort to communalise RTM radio programmes in conjunction with the Independence Day-Malaysia Day celebration this year.
The programme entailed Minnal FM radio announcer S. Johnson touring
Peninsular Malaysia for one month to spread the spirit of love for the country in conjunction with the Independence Day-Malaysia Day celebration among Tamil radio listeners.
"Johnson embarked on the journey with only RM10 (US$3.24) in his pocket and without any luggage. He depended on Minnal FM radio listeners for food, drink, clothing, place to stay and transport," said Rais.
He said despite different beliefs, the people remained united in rejoicing the spirits of independence with Minnal FM listeners.
On the Minnal FM Fans Club, he said it would help make the Tamil radio station stay relevant by establishing close ties with listeners.
Present were Minister of Human Resources Dr S.Subramaniam, Malaysia's special envoy on infrastructure to India and South Asia S. Samy Vellu, Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A.Kohillan Pillay, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department S.K Devamany and Deputy Federal Territories and Urban Well-being Minister M.Saravanan.
