Iran basketball team too strong for Lebanon

WUHAN, China, Sept. 21 (MNA) -- Iran continued its unbeaten run in the 26th FIBA Asia Championship on Tuesday by beating Lebanon.

Twice defending champion earned the fifth straight victory, defeating its archrival Lebanon 76-45 in Group E. Iran has already defeated Chinese Taipei, Qatar, Uzbekistan and Malaysia in the competition.

Hamed Afagh and Samad Nikkhah Bahrami posted 16 points each in the match held at the Wuhan Sports Center.

“We have a longstanding rivalry in our region. It was good to win from that point of view. Otherwise I don’t think we played as well should have or could have,” said Samad Nikkhah Bahrami.

Iran is scheduled to play South Korea on Wednesday.

The champion will directly qualify for next year's London Olympics while the runner-up and bronze medalist have to compete in the Olympic qualifying tournament in July, 2012.
