Digger wounded in Afghanistan back home

A special forces soldier critically wounded in a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan earlier this month has arrived home in Australia, Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says. The soldier was among nine diggers hurt in a firefight on September 2 when insurgents hit a coalition convoy with gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades. The unnamed soldier was initially moved from Tarin Kowt in southern Afghanistan to
US medical facilities in Germany for specialist care. But he has now returned to Australia and hopes are high he will make a full recovery.

"The soldier most critically injured has arrived back home in Australia," Mr Fitzgibbon told parliament. "He is under the very best of care. He's in good spirits and we're hopeful of a full recovery."

Two other Australian soldiers wounded in the ambush had also returned to Australia, the defence minister said. A spokesman for Mr Fitzgibbon later said the soldier "with life-threatening injuries" arrived back in Australia on Monday.
