ASEAN-CHINA TRADE TOUCHES US$171 BLN

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- Trade volume between Asean countries and China for the first six months of the year has reached US$171 billion, said Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry Jacob Dungau Sagan.

Sagan said China's trade with Asean countries was on increasing trend and the momentum was expected to continue growing for the second half of the year.

"Last year, Asean trade with China grew by 35 per cent from the previous year at US$293 billion," he said at 2011 Sun Tzu Art of War Seminar: Winning Business Strategies, organised by Alliance Bank here Wednesday.

In 2009, Asean's trade with China totalled US$213 billion.

Sagan said Malaysia has also gained tremendously in bilateral trade and investment with China since the full adoption of China-Asean free trade agreement from Jan 1 last year.

Trade between the two countries reached US$45.6 billion last year, making China Malaysia's largest trading partner.
