WORKING GROUP REPORT ON SPORE'S UPR TO BE ADOPTED

By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah

SINGAPORE, Sept 21 (Bernama) -- The Working Group Report on Singapore's first Universal Periodic Review (UPR) will be adopted at the 18th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sept 22.

The UPR is a mandatory process which subjects all UN member States to a review of their human rights situation before the HRC, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement Wednesday.

It said the adoption of the Working Group Report represents the completion of Singapore's first UPR.

The Report contains a summary of the proceedings from Singapore's
participation in the 11th Session of the UPR Working Group in May 2011, and includes recommendations from other member States and Singapore's response to the recommendations.

Singapore will be represented at the 18th HRC by Tan Yee Woan, Singapore's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva.

Singapore's next UPR is scheduled to be held in five years' time.
