SOMALIAN PM SENDS CONDOLENCES TO NORAMFAIZUL'S FAMILY
NEW YORK (Bernama) - Somalia's Prime Minister Dr Abdiweli Mohamed
Ali today conveyed his and his country's condolences to Malaysia and the family
of BernamaTV cameraman Noramfaizul Mohd Nor who was killed while participating
in a Malaysian humanitarian aid mission in Mogadishu early this month.
Abdiweli conveyed the condolences through Malaysia's Foreign Minister
Anifah Aman during their bilateral meeting. Both are here to attend the United
Nations General Assembly.
"Abdiweli is deeply touched by Malaysia's concern over the situation in
Somalia and its effort through its non-govermental organisations (NGOs) to send
humanitarian aid such as food and medicines to the Somalians," Anifah told
Bernama Wednesday night.
Anifah is leading a Malaysian delegation to the 66th UN General Assembly
themed, "The Role of Mediation in the Settlement of Disputes by Peaceful Means".
Noramfaizul, 39, was killed by a sniper shot in Mogadishu on Sept 3 while
returning in a four-wheel-drive vehicle to the hotel he was staying while
covering a humanitarian mission organised by the 1Malaysia Putera Club.
TV3 cameraman was Aji Saregar Mazlan was also injured in the incident.
Anifah said despite the incident, Malaysia would continue to send
humanitarian aid to the Somalians suffering from years of conflict and drought.
"Mercy Malaysia is now in Somalia and several other NGOs have offered,
through our ministrty, to help the Somalians," he added.
Recently, 1Malaysia Putera Club president Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim announced
that the Malaysian humanitarian aid team would return to Somalia next month
where they would also name one of the refugee camps there after the late
Noramfaizul.
