Medium earthquake jolts eastern Turkey
ANKARA (A.A) - September 22, 2011 - A medium earthquake shook eastern Turkey early Thursday morning, the country's emergency situation management agency, AFAD, said.
AFAD said no casualties were reported from the magnitude-5.4 earthquake that hit Kemah town of the eastern province of Erzincan.
Earlier, Turkey's quake monitoring agency, the Kandilli Observatory, said the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.6 and its epicenter was Refahiye town.
"Initial reports show no loss of life or damage to the buildings," said Selman Yenigun, Erzincan's governor.
AFAD said eleven aftershocks hit the region in two hours after the first tremor.
Nearly 33 thousand people were killed in a massive 8.2 earthquake in Erzincan in 1939. The province sits on the far eastern edge of the North Anatolian Fault.
