HOUSEWIFE DIES AFTER STERILIZATION SURGERY

Nganjuk, Sept 23 (ANTARA) - Sunarsih (37), a housewife, died after undergoing a family planning (KB) sterilization operation at Nganjuk General Hospital, East Java.
Her husband, Dariono (39), said the surgery was done in the government-owned Nganjuk hospital on Monday (Sept 11) on recommendation from KB officers in Lonceret District, Nganjuk.
"My wife was an active member of the KB movement. We don't want to have another child because we already have three," he said at his house in Sambijajar village, Lonceret district.
He said beside his wife, there were four other Lonceret housewives who had the same surgery at Nganjuk General Hospital.
"My wife's operation took longer than the other four housewives' whereas it was only a small surgery," he said.
He was shocked to find his wife in a coma when she was taken out from the surgery room and moved to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Before the surgery, Sunarsih was in good shape as shown by the pre-surgery physical test she took.
"After two days in a coma, my wife finally died last Tuesday (Sept 12) in that hospital," said Dariono who had lost his life support because his wife was also helping the family's economy by selling vegetables from village to village.
He was deeply disappointed because the hospital only gave him Rp2 million as 'compensation' for his wife's death. "A hospital employee came to our house and gave me Rp2 million," he said.
Commenting on Sunarsih's death, the director of Nganjuk General Hospital, Dr Nurhadi, said according to a medical diagnosis, she died by the impact of an allergy to drugs.
"The surgery was conducted according to correct medical procedures. There was no element of malpractice," he said.
Although the hospital had not made any medical mistake, it had still handed Rp2 million to Sunarsih's family as a token of care and responsibility, Nurhadi said.
