STRIVE FOR BAHASA MELAYU AND INDONESIA TO BECOME RESPECTED LANGUAGES
By Ahmad Fuad Yahya
PADANG (West Sumatra), Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Efforts must be taken to make Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia among the world's respected languages, said Information Communication and Culture Minister Dr Rais Yatim.
He said this was in line with his wish to make these two languages Asean lingua franca.
"A stUdy of the populations in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei and Southern Thailand revealed that 300 million people speak in Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Melayu.
"It is a good idea for us to pair these languages with Mandarin, French, Japanese or Arabic and turn them into respected languages with focus on Indonesia, Malaysia and others," he told reporters here Friday.
He said this in response to a question from a local reporter on his
suggestion for Bahasa Melayu and Bahasa Indonesia to become an Asean language.
Dr Rais, who was accompanied by his wife Masnah Rais, arrived here this morning for a three-day visit to West Sumatra with a Malaysian delegation which will be attending an Indonesia-Malaysia journalist and culturalists programme in Bukit Tinggi.
He added that the two languages were rich and complete just like American English and British English.
