RAIS CALLS FOR M'SIAN-INDONESIAN HISTORICAL, CULTURAL ASPECTS TO BE ENHANCED
By Ahmad Fuad Yahya
PADANG (West Sumatra), Sept 23 (Bernama) -- Minister of Information
Communication and Culture Dr Rais Yatim Friday proposed that historical and cultural aspects be enhanced between Malaysia and Indonesia in future.
He said these aspects should be the focus in the relations between the two countries because historical and cultural links have shown to help forge special relations between several countries such as the United States and Britian and European countries and also between Singapore and China.
"Let's find the path with our wisdom. Culturalists, historians and
politicians can help forge better people relations of the two countries," he said when meeting with West Sumatra Governor Prof Dr Irwan Prayitno at the governor's office here.
Rais, who was accompanied by his wife Masnah Rais, arrived here this for a three-day visit to West Sumatra, His delegation will be attending attend a programme for journalist and cultural experts of Malaysia and Indonesia at Bukit Tinggi Saturday.
The minister said common historical and cultural ties would be more relevant and useful for the two countries rather than highlighting differences as found in language and terms.
Speaking to reporters later, he said efforts to strengthen
Indonesia/Malaysia relations should not be based on rhetoric but be followed up with joint programmes and activities seeking common similarities.
Teachers and lecturers for example, he said, could moderate views on history and culture to bring the two countries closer for mutual benefit.
"This is a pioneering phase and it is not easy as we have various views and sentiments but as leaders with similar cultural and historical backgrounds, such as the governor and myself, we could combine our efforts to create an identity," he said.
Rais said the visit to Padang and Bukit Tinggi this time was aimed at empowering relations between West Sumatra and Malaysia.
Earlier, Rais and his wife were given a full traditional Minang welcome at the Minangkabau International Airport here this morning.
A group of dancers presented a cultural dance followed by the handing over of 'sireh pinang' to him and Datin Masnah as a symbol of welcome.
