MALAYSIA "PASAR MALAM" ROCKS TRAFALGAR SQUARE
By Joshua Foong
LONDON (Bernama) - Trafalgar Square was "conquered" by a barrage
of Malaysian food stalls in the second instalment of Malaysia Night here Friday.
Taking the form of an authentic Malaysian Pasar Malam (Night Market) created
by Malaysia Kitchen, the event was to showcase the cuisine and culture of
Malaysia.
About 25,000 Londoners visited the night market where 25 outlets sold
Malaysian favourites, including beef rendang (spicy meat dish), nasi lemak (rice
cooked in coconut milk) and satay (grilled meat served with spicy peanut sauce)
The event, which started at 3pm, was best patronised when people began
returning home from work.
One of them was Accountant Diane Peterson, who said:"I actually had other
dinner plans. But upon catching the smell of the satay, I could not resist
diverting here."
The Malaysia Night was launched by High Commissioner Zakaria Sulong and was
graced by the London Deputy Mayor Richard Barnes.
Speaking to Bernama, Zakaria drew attention to the event being held two
years in a row.
"Through a collective effort of Malaysian agencies and assistance from the
office of the Deputy Mayor, we have been able to break convention by holding our
event consecutively," he said.
It is understood that the allocation of a spot in Trafalgar Square is highly
competitive and usually based on rotation.
Malaysia External Trade Development Corp CEO Dr Wong Lai Sum said the event,
part of a Malaysia Kitchen initiative, was to build on the existing market
presence of Malaysian cuisine overseas.
"Although Malaysia is not a big food producer, we certainly make great food.
We can use good food to reach people's hearts through their stomachs," she said
Malaysian Restaurants Association UK chairman Teddy Chen expressed his
confidence that Malaysian food would quickly build a strong reputation among the
British.
"Malaysian restaurants in the UK, together with Malaysia Kitchen, has struck
the right chord using social media and the allure of our well known delicacies
to see more and more people falling in love with our dishes," he said.
