THIRD PORT 'TO BE BUILT IN MALAYSIA'S PORT KLANG SOON'

PORT KLANG (Malaysia), Sept 26 (Bernama) -- A third port is expected to be built by next year near here to complement the existing Northport and Westport, said Port Klang Authority (PKA) chairman Datuk Dr Teh Kim Poo.

He said the proposed port is needed to handle the growing demand of port facilities here as the current two ports are only expected to cater to these needs until 2016.

"The PKA Board has given its approval to build a third port, but the Cabinet has yet to give the green light. A third port will definitely bring much help in assisting the other two ports," he told a press conference after the closing ceremony of Port Klang's golden jubilee celebrations.

Northport and Westport are currently the two main ports in Port Klang, offering extensive connectivity for worldwide imports and exports.

Both ports, ranked among the world's top 20, are the most important hub ports in the Asian region, connecting to over 300 ports worldwide.

Teh said the third port, to be built near Westport, will be privately-owned, with PKA overseeing its operations.

On Port Klang's centennial celebrations to mark its over 100 years as the country's maritime gateway, Teh said there was a good turnout of people from all over the country.

The celebrations started on Friday with the launch of a special coffee-table book documenting Port Klang's history and progress.

A career advancement talk, blood donation drive, open-air concert and karaoke competition were among the events held to mark the celebrations.

A charity golf game on Sunday brought the celebrations to a close.
