ERRANT MALAYSIAN PRIVATE COLLEGES FINED

JOHOR BAHARU, Sept 26 (Bernama) -- Fines totalling RM1 million
(US$314,369)have been imposed on against private institutions of higher learning (IPTS) nationwide for offences under the Higher Education Act 1996 as of Sept 15.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Dr Hou Kok Chung said of the amount, RM185,000 (US$58,156) had been collected so far and in Johor, three IPTS were fined and another prosecuted.

"The Higher Education Ministry is committed to ensure there is no flouting of the Act so as to ensure quality of teaching and learning at IPTS," he told reporters after attending a meeting with the South Zone IPTS here on Monday.

Meanwhile, he said 311 IPTS had participated in the Quality Measurement System Evaluation and Private College Equivalence (Kesetaraan Kolej Swasta), a system to measure the quality of governance, study programme and graduates produced by an IPTS.

He said of the total, only 232 were qualified for auditing and 79 were not qualified because they did not have courses which had received acreditation from the Malaysian Qualification Agency.

Nine withdrew because they were in a buying and selling process. The outcome of the audit would be known soon.
