World Bank admits no loans paid to Iran since 2005

TEHRAN,Sept.26(MNA)-- The World Bank group has announced that it has approved no loans to Iran since 2005, though it has not been prohibited from financing humanitarian and development projects.

In a transcript released on its website, the World Bank announced that although it has not prohibited to investing in Iran under UN sanctions, but no new loans to Iran have been approved since 2005.

Meanwhile, Iranian Finance and Economy Minister Shamseddin Hosseini criticized the World Bank’s behavior in regard to Iran on Friday at World Bank- IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, the group’s formal press release shows that Iran’s criticism is right.

Hosseini said that the World Bank management, contrary to its Articles of Agreements, avoids approving the Country Assistance Strategy for Iran, and refrains from offering technical assistance to Iran.

Meanwhile, The World Bank official website in a report said that the World Bank Group fully complies with UN sanctions on Iran and reviews payments and contracts under World Bank Group financed projects to ensure that no loan funds are used to finance goods prohibited by the UN sanctions or payments made to designated entities or individuals.

According to the report, Security Council resolution 1737 (December 2006), while calling on member states and international organizations to refrain from making new financing available to Iran, exempts humanitarian and development activities conducted by international financial institutions from this prohibition. Nonetheless, no new World Bank loans to Iran have been approved since 2005.
