France awards medals to two senior teachers

(KPL) The Government of France pinned the Order of Palmes Académiques or Academic Palms on two senior teachers of National University of Laos to recognise their great contribution to enhance cooperation between Laos and France.
The Orders were awarded by Mr François Senemaud, Ambassador of France in Laos, on Monday at French Embassy, to Prof Dr Bounpong Keorodom, and Phetsamone Khounsavath, Vice Presidents of the National University of Laos.
The medals were given thanks to their contribution to the development of the cooperation between France and Laos, concerning the superior education and research, one of the top priority sectors of the “Document cadre de partenariat” (Partnership Goals Document), signed by the two countries on January, 2007.
Thanks to their support, the Franco-Laos cooperation with the National University of Laos was developed consistently since many years, especially in teaching French, with the VALOFRASE project, building a “French-speaking provincial centre” at Dongdok campus, promotion of the French-speaking elites, and formation of specialists in many domains like agriculture, teaching…
They also are the main actors of rapprochement with the French Trade Chamber in Laos, and a collaboration with several French firms installed in Laos, which allowed to create a “Superior studies and employment forum”. This forum is meant to highlight to the Lao students the possibilities offered to them, as well as the creation of a conferences cycle, animated during the whole year by French firm representatives.
Thanks to their activities, some real academic partnerships between higher education and research schools of both countries which will allow to increase and to perpetuate exchanges between professors and scientists either French or Lao for common projects, and the research of common interests. These partnerships will constitute a contribution of expertise, in order to help the reform of the higher education sector, began in Laos by the Ministry of Education.
Prof Dr Bounpong has done his studies in French, at the Pedagogy Academic Institute in Vientiane (IUPV). He then obtained his degree, Master’s degree, Post-graduate qualification and his Es Letters PHD (linguistic) at the University of Rouen. He began his career in 1979, as a professor in the French Department of the IUPV, attached to the National University of Laos in 1979. Then he became Chief of the French Department in 1990, and then director of the Academic affairs bureau in 1999, and Director of the Research and Academic Education Bureau in 2002. Since 2006, he is Vice President of the National University of Laos, in charge of planning, the international cooperation and French-speaking affairs. He is the author of many publications and communications, which are devoted to the place of French language in Laos. He is part of the Orientation council in the French-speaking institute for the tropical medicine. Since he was appointed at the Knight rank, in the Order of the Palmes Académiques, French government decided to promote him to the rank of Officer, in order to thank his contribution in the development of the academic cooperation between France and Laos.
Professor Phetsamone KHOUNSAVATH has done his studies in the IUPV, and obtained a degree in French, in 1976. He managed to obtain a Master’s degree, his Post-graduate qualification (language sciences) and a PHD (linguistic) at the University of Rouen. He was manager of the French Department of the University from 1976 to 1996, and occupied the functions of Deputy Dean of the Social and Human Sciences Faculty. In 2000, he became the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, and, from 2006 till this day, Vice President of the National University of Laos, in charge of Academic affairs, research and post-academic studies. Awarded in 2001 Knight in the Order of the Palmes Académiques, the French government decided to promote him to the rank of Officer, to thank his contribution in the development of the academic cooperation between France and Laos.
