MALAYSIA GOVT TO AID VISA-LESS STUDENTS RETURN TO SYRIA
PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Sept 27 (Bernama) -- The government is prepared to assist Malaysian students without visas to return to Syria and continue their studies once the situation there returns to normal, Higher Education Minister Mohd Khaled Nordin said on Tuesday.
He said going back should not pose a problem for those who had earlier entered Syria through appropriate channels but there are students who had gone on social visas or overstayed.
"They took advantage of the turmoil in the country to come back to Malaysia but will face problems when they try to go back," he added.
"We will try to help but whether they can get back or not, that's another matter," he said when asked to comment on the problems faced by some Malaysian students going back to Syria without visas.
Mohd Khaled was speaking to reporters after handing over the Ministry's international scholarship offer letters here.
He said RM10.9 million (US$3.465 million) had been allocated to sponsor 110 international scholarships for the 2011/2012 academic session.
So far 562 such scholarships have been given out since they were introduced in 1999.
