BEWARE OF CYBER SCAM: MALAYSIA POLICE
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 (Bernama) -- The police have reminded the public to be wary of a syndicate which fleeces unsuspecting victims of their money via the internet.
In a statement on its Facebook on Tuesday, the police said the modus
operandi of the syndicate is to befriend a victim through social networks such as Facebook, e-mail and chat sites for between one and four months.
After gaining the person's trust, a member of the syndicate would inform the potential victim that a gift parcel containing jewellery, money or gold is on its way to his/her address.
This would be followed by a delivery order receipt, via e-mail, to the victim.
The police said the victim would later be informed by the syndicate that the parcel has been seized by the customs department.
"The victim would be asked to pay a fee to the customs department and a forwarding agent by remitting the money into an account given by the syndicate to claim the parcel.
"The victim would only know of the scam after making several payments to the said account, and not receiving the parcel," said the police.
