UNHCR welcomes UAE's efforts to resolve the situation of stateless people

Geneva, Sep 24, 2008 (WAM) - The United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has welcomed UAE's efforts to resolve the situation of thousands of stateless people.

UNHCR spokesperson William Spindler said at a press briefing that earlier this month, the Ministry of Interior announced the launch of a two-month campaign for the registration of the country's stateless population, and the establishment of four registration centres in the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman.

At the registration centres, applicants fill out detailed forms explaining their current situation, and the authorities will make an appropriate decision after extensive scrutiny of each application.

UNHCR also hailed the efforts of the UAE government in this regard, as well as the media awareness campaign it launched to encourage registration.

'We also welcome the statements of the country's leadership who have expressed UAE's commitment to resolve the problem of statelessness', said the spokesperson.

He called on the other countries to follow the brave step taken by UAE, and expressed optimism that UAE's move will inspire others to resolve similar problems.

'We hope that a successful resolution of this issue in the UAE will encourage other countries in the region to follow suit in addressing the problem of statelessness', Spindler said.
