MALAYSIA LOBBIES FOR UNESCO INTERNATIONAL BUREAU OF EDUCATION SEAT

PARIS, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia, which has excelled in educational development, is now actively campaigning to be a member of the International Bureau of Education (IBE) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), says Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He said Malaysia wants to play an active role in the IBE, especially in helping Unesco member countries which lag behind in education.

"Malaysia has the capability and expertise to assist other member nations in this field," he told Malaysian journalists on Wednesday at the end of his two-day working visit to Paris.

Muhyiddin is here to attend the meeting of the Unesco executive board. Malaysia's term as a member of the board ends this October, and membership selection to the board will be held at the general assembly of the world body from Oct 25 to Nov 10.

He said Malaysia's offer to be a member of the IBE has received positive feedback so far.

Speaking at the Unesco executive board meeting on Wednesday, Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, urged Unesco to extend the period of implementation of the Education for All (EFA) policy, saying some members would not be able to meet the 2015 deadline due to constraints such as lack of funds, natural disasters, famine and war.

Asked how member countries could assist them, he said Unesco had given various forms of aid such as funding and cooperation in providing technical and vocational training for their people.

In his speech, Muhyiddin also shared Malaysia's success in providing quality education through the National Key Result Area programmes, adding that Malaysia also approved US$5 million in educational aid to Unesco.

He stressed that Malaysia has no problems in implementing the EFA policy as it is the country's objective to provide quality education to all for free.

In fact, he said, Malaysia has almost fulfilled the EFA policy objectives although the 2015 deadline is still a long way.

On Malaysia's achievements as a member of the Unesco executive board, he said the country has since been appointed to various committees and has managed to get Tasik Chini designated as a biosphere reserve, Batu Bersurat Terengganu (Inscribed Stone of Terengganu) included in the Memory of the World Register and Mak Yong as an 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity' by Unesco.

Other achievements are getting Melaka and George Town declared as World Heritage Sites.

Muhyiddin said upon being appointed to the executive board in October 2007, Malaysia was chosen as secretary of the Unesco-Commonwealth Group and then as a member of 10 other committees, with the latest as vice-chairman of the Unesco Representative Group for the 2010-2011 term.

He said although Malaysia's term on the executive board would end in October, the country would continue to be active in giving its views to the world body.
