INSURGENTS STORM SCHOOL, KILL 4 TROOPS IN S THAILAND
BANGKOK, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- Insurgents stormed a school in Narathiwat in Thailand's restive south on Wednesday, killing four soldiers and injuring two other soldiers and a pupil, a police spokesman said.
More than 15 insurgents ambushed the Ban Lamoh School in Ruesor, Narathiwat province at 12.30pm and attacked the six soldiers guarding the school, he said.
"There was an exchange of fire. They also took some M-16s from the
soldiers," he said without giving the exact number of weapons.
The four soldiers killed at the scene were identified as Sgt Niti Arree, 35, Sgt Suphachai Kaewnoonuan, 26, Pte Naphasin Choosri, 23, and Pte Mutjarin Sulakarn, 23.
Those injured are Pte Krivit Suk-on, 23, Pte Vittaya Naratcho, 23, and a six-year-old pupil.
It is a normal scene for soldiers to guard schools as well as escort teachers to and from schools in the south following unrest in the region.
Meanwhile, a man was killed after being shot at the Pakajinoh village market in Donrak, Nongchik in Pattani province on Wednesday morning.
Nongchik police chief Pol Col Chanawi Chamaruek said the victim, Kampong Ngogngarm, 48, was shot twice in the head and once in the chest.
He was shot by two gunmen on a motorcycle and later died on the way to the hospital.
More than 4,500 people have died since suspected separatists resumed their armed campaign to seek independence for the three provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani seven years ago.
