MAKING MALAYSIA GLOBAL HALAL HUB 'NEEDS CONSUMER SUPPORT'
KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 28 (Bernama) -- Efforts to turn Malaysia into a global halal hub will be accelerated with the support of consumers while manufacturers, suppliers and retailers should strive for halal certification, said Sharpers Malaysia Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Mohd Shukri Abdullah.
He said consumers should support the Halal Fiesta Malaysia (Halfest) 2011, the biggest halal products and services expo in Malaysia, which aims for up to RM28 million (US$8.85 million) in sales.
Organised by Shapers Malaysia and Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) with CIMB Islamic as the main sponsor, Halfest 2011 will be held at the Putra World Trade Centre here from Oct 12 to 16 and entrance is free.
Mohd Shukri said although Halfest 2011 is open to companies with halal certification, those without one could still take part if their applications are still being processed by the Islamic Development Department.
"If a Bumiputera company is only one-year-old, it can still join Halfest 2011 provided it obtains halal certification in the second year," he told reporters here on Wednesday.
Chef Zam or Zamzani Abdul Wahab, and artistes Jaafar Onn, Salih Yaccob and Serina Redzuawan were present to lend their support to Halfest 2011.
Chef Zam, who is also a Halfest 2011 spokesman, said he will feature a variety of cuisine, combining eastern and western recipes, at the "Chef Zam Wok-Shop" throughout the expo.
Halfest Expo 2011 is a strategic alliance between government agencies, the private sector and non-governmental organisations.
Among those involved are Halal Development Corporation, CIMB Islamic Bank, Mara, the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry, the Islamic Development Department, and the Malaysian Islamic Consumers Association.
