MALAYSIA 'LUCKY TO HAVE VISIONARY LEADERS'
SINTOK (Kedah, Malaysia), Sept 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is fortunate to have visionary and far-sighted leaders who are also sensitive to the needs of the people and able to manage the country well, says International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Mukhriz Mahathir.
He said the attitude and qualities possessed by these leaders had also earned Malaysia respect internationally.
"The people should be grateful that our leaders have been managing the country's economy well so that they have been able to enjoy stability and prosperity," Mukhriz said when launching the 24th Convocation Festival of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) here on Wednesday.
"That is why we need leaders who are capable of continuing the good work and not leaders who can only talk. Talk is good but problems cannot be solved and work cannot get done if we 'asyik berceramah' (preoccupied with talking).
"Sometimes we go and listen to 'ceramah' for mental stimulation, but what we hear are harsh and abusive words from the speakers when condemning others."
Mukhriz, who is also Kedah Umno liaison deputy chief, said it would not be right to say that "whoever takes over the running of this country, will do an equally good job".
"The fact is, Malaysia's success today is the product of the sound policies of a visionary government since the country achieved its independence," he said, adding that the setting up of UUM 24 years ago in what was once dense jungle was part of that success.
Later, speaking to reporters, Mukhriz noted that almost 75 per cent of the UUM graduands had obtained employment within six months after completing their studies.
The festival, which runs until Oct 7, is held in conjunction with UUM's convocation where 8,556 graduands will receive their doctorate, Master's and Bachelor's degree scrolls.
Present at the convocation festival launch was UUM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak.
