MALAYSIA NAVY, AIR FORCE END EXERCISE ON OVERLAPPING MARITIME CLAIMS

BUTTERWORTH (Penang, Malaysia), Sept 29 (Bernama) -- The chief of the Royal Mlaysia Navy (RMN) has expressed satisfaction with the just concluded 'Angkasa Samudera Exercise' involving RMN and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF), saying it has prepared Malaysian defence forces in facing overlapping claims in the country's territorial waters.

The annual joint exercise was this year held on Sept 14-29.

"Regional political developments involving overlapping claims mean that we must always be on alert for the possibility of fast deployment in times of crisis.

"Such an exercise is suited to the current political situation in Southeast Asia," Admiral Abdul Aziz Jaafar told reporters at the exercise closing ceremony at the RMAF base here on Thursday.

Also present were RMAF chief Rodzali Daud and 2nd Commander Infantry Division, Maj Gen Azizan Mat Delin, who was representing the Army Chief.

Abdul Aziz said he was happy with improvements made in the annual joint exercise, especially in cooperation between RMN and RMAF, to ensure it was in line with technological developments, tactics and needs.

The exercise also made history when Science Research and Defence Technology Institute (STRIDE) and Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) were involved as evaluators and data collectors to create a model to evaluate the effectiveness of the training.

Rodzali said for the first time, the RMAF Warfare Centre used a simulation system called "Extended Air Defence System Simulation" (EADSIM) to simulate tactical war situations.

"This method allows RMN and RMAF to come up with a contingency plan and logistical support plan for field training next year," he added.
