FIRST MALAYSIA HAJ PILGRIMS ARRIVE IN MEDINA

From Abdul Aziz Harun

MEDINA (Saudi Arabia), Sept 29 (Bernama) -- The first group of 450 Malaysian haj pilgrims arrived here on Thursday morning before leaving for Mecca to fulfil the umrah and haj ritual for the 1432 Hijrah season.

Upon arrival at the Prince Mohammad Bin Abdulaziz International Airport here from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport at 5.45am, the pilgrims were taken to Movenpick Hotel where they are being accommodated.

They were cheerful despite the tiring seven-hour journey and immigration clearance as they looked forward to perform the haj, most of them for the first time.

The pilgrims, who arrived at the hotel in 10 buses, were greeted by Malaysian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Syed Omar Syed Al-Saggaf and his wife, Haj Delegation deputy chief Tengku Aziz Raja Abdullah and Consulate General of Malaysia in Jeddah Muhammad Khalid Abassi.

Pilgrim Sabariah Mohammad, 60, from Keratong, Pahang, said she is thankful for finally making it to the Holy Land after a 10-year wait although sad as her husband, who passed away in July last year, could not make it.

Sabariah is accompanied by her eldest son Rosli Ahmad, 43, from Country Homes, Rawang.

Rosli said he was amazed with Lembaga Tabung Haji's (Malaysian Pilgrimage Board) efficiency and the friendly disposition of its employees in tending to the needs of the pilgrims.

Another pilgrim, Shaari Mahmus, 70, from Parit, Perak, who is on his second haj pilgrimage after his first one in 1988, noticed a marked improvement in Tabung Haji's efficiency, saying its employees are efficient and competent in handling the haj travel.

He added that the Medina Airport is more spacious and comfortable while the immigration clearance was hassle-free.

While their luggage was taken to their rooms, the pilgrims were served with refreshments in the hotel's dining hall.
