MALAYSIA MULLS MORE FARMERS' MARKETS AMID RISING COSTS
JOHOR BAHARU (Bernama) - The federal government is studying the feasibility of opening up more farmers' markets to offset the high cost of living in the capital, deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin said.
Muhyiddin said on Thursday the present once-weekly farmers' markets will be turned into permanent markets opening daily.
"This provides opportunities to more traders to take part in farmers' markets and spur competition, prompting them to sell goods at reasonable prices. This may help lower the prices," he said during a dialogue with some 100 representatives from non-governmental organisations based here on Thursday.
Responding to a question on the government's efforts to ease the burden of Johor Baharu residents in the face of high cost of living, he said the government is aware of the problem, which is exacerbated by strong demand from Singaporean customers especially on weekends.
