Party Secretary General visits Nam Theun 2

(KPL) The Party Secretary General and President Choummaly Sayasone and his delegation on 20 September visited the construction of Nam Theun 2 Hydropower Dam project in Nakai district, Khammouane province, which is now almost 100 per cent to complete.
Accompanied by leading officials of Khammouane province, President Choummaly was briefed by the Director General of Nam Theun 2 about the general condition of the construction.
The Nam Theun 2 project is not only a source of industrial electricity generation but also an economic development project of Laos, said the Nam Theun 2 Director.
The dam site stretches over three central provinces of Khammouane, Borikhamsay and Savannakhet, which also brings about other development projects such as road construction and other infrastructure development projects.
The construction work is 95 per cent to complete. It is expected that the first turbine will be put into operation next March 2009 whose output will be sold to the Electricite du Laos, and the second one in next June 2009, whose output will be exported to Thailand.
Each turbine will operate on a trial basis for six months and at the end of 2009 the purchasing agreement will be officially effective.
More than 1,200 households of 6,200 people have been removed from the flooding area and are resettled on the edge of the reservoir with the supply of all facilities, including school, dispensaries and land allocation for agriculture and irrigation system.
The Nakai biodiversity conservation area and Nam Theun river resource are well protected by the Nam Theun 2 project that the Nam Theun Company will contribute US$1 million each year during the concession term.
