Iranian FM Urges Reform in Security Council's Unjust Structure

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi urged the United Nations to reform the unjust structure of the Security Council, and described collective action as the best way of decision-making at the world body.
"The UN should be considered as an inter-governmental organization which is managed by all its members and its symbol is the General Assembly," Salehi said, addressing a meeting of the representatives of the UN members in New York.
He also reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran shares the same concerns of a large number of countries on the further empowerment of the UNSC which weaken the performance and power of the UN General Assembly.
Salehi criticized the unfair structure of the UNSC which consists of 5 permanent members and 10 rotating members, stressing that the number of the permanent UNSC member states should increase.
The Security Council is the most important UN decision-making body, with its five permanent members - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - each having a power of veto over its decisions.
The 10 non-permanent seats are filled by the General Assembly, with five countries elected each year to two-year non-renewable mandates. To secure a seat, a candidate nation has to win two-thirds of votes cast in a secret ballot.
Iran has long objected to the unfair structure of the Security Council, reiterating that the more than one billion Muslim population should have a permanent seat at the UNSC.
