'Liberation of occupied lands, prerequisite for Palestinian state'

TEHRAN, Oct.2 (MNA) – Hamas political bureau chief Khaled Meshaal said that liberation of occupied territories is a prerequisite for the establishment of Palestinian state.

Meshaal made the remarks in an address to officials and scholars from 70 countries who had gathered at a conference on the Palestinian Intifada in Tehran on Saturday.

As the first speaker of the conference, Meshaal thanked the Islamic Republic for hosting the conference, saying, “If Iran was not that powerful, we could never attend such a gathering.”

During his speech, he said that after the failure of various alternative plans to settle the issue of Palestine, the only option for liberation of the holy Qods is “resistance.”

Commenting on some disagreements between the Palestinian parties about recognition of Israel, he said the plan presented by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is worth mulling over, but the United States and the Zionists exposed their true face as they have started efforts to stymie the plan.

On Sept. 23, Mahmoud Abbas presented his proposal for recognition of Palestinian statehood and full UN membership to the United Nations, setting a process in motion.

Meshaal said Abbas is resisting pressure exerted by the U.S. and Israel.

“In this moment of history that the true face of the Zionists has been revealed, Mahmoud Abbas and our brothers in the Fatah movement as well as other independent figures should make efforts to achieve unity,” the Hamas political leader stated.
