TEEN GRATEFUL FOR CHANCE TO PERFORM HAJ THIS YEAR
By Abdul Aziz Harun
MEDINA (Bernama) - Sixteen-year-old Muhammad Amar Muhammad Sani would not have dreamed he would get an opportunity to accompany his parents for this year's haj.
On Sunday, he was visiting the base of the Jabal Uhud hill here with them.
It began when the student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Agama Sultan Muhammad, Batu Berendam, Melaka obtained RM10,000 for winning a national-level Islamic Innovation Award for the Islamic Studies category in June.
He won the award after successfully coming up with a new online application system for Religious National Secondary Schools and Government-Assisted Religious Schools, which is currently used in Melaka and under discussion for possible implementation nationwide.
Determined to go for the haj using his prize money, Muhammad Amar received the green light from the Prime Minister's Department, a small miracle, considering his parents had to wait over eight years to get permission for the trip.
"I am grateful for this opportunity because it took my parents more than eight years for such an opportunity," said Muhammad Amar, who may be the youngest Malaysian haj pilgrim this year.
He said, visiting historical places he had only heard about from his teachers and read in textbooks, was an eye-opener that should not be taken for granted.
"We can see how hot it is here, so imagine how it must have been when Prophet Muhammad fought for Islam. This trip has humbled me," he said.
Meanwhile, his father, Muhammad Sani Bidin, 44, said they were happy and proud to finally set foot in the Holy Land, especially after a long wait.
The Melaka Education Department personnel said his son had been fond of installation and computer applications from young, so they constantly encouraged the teen's interest in both activities.
He said he was proud of Muhammad Amar's achievement and hoped he would pursue his studies to a higher level after the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination.
The family was among hundreds of Malaysian haj pilgrims who visited the base of the Jabal Uhud hill here, where a fierce battle between Prophet Muhammad and the Quraish forces took place.
