MALAYSIA-WEST KALIMANTAN SMUGGLING ACTIVITIES INCREASING
JAKARTA, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Smuggling activites from Malaysia to West Kalimantan is reported to be increasing since two weeks ago involving items such as speed boat engines, sugar and fish.
West Kalimantan Sanggau District police chief Winarto said police had seized seven speed boat engines and 8.5 tonnes of sugar, brought in from East Malaysia state of Sarawak without legitimate documents, since last week.
Police had also detained two Indonesians; one from Pontianak over the smuggling of the engines; and another from Balai Karangan on the sugar smuggling case, he was quoted saying the Kompas daily on Monday.
Winarto said a lorry transporting fish from Malaysia through Entikong in Sanggau district and Nangka Badau-Lubuk Antu border post, in the last two weeks, had also been detained.
Pontianak Marine Resources and Fisheries Surveillance Station head Bambang Nugroho said a lorry was detected smuggling fish from Malaysia, five times in the last two weeks.
He said, each time, the lorry brought in three tonnes of fish, and some other items as well, to Putussibau, capital of Kapuas Hulu district.
