MALAYSIAN FIRMS SHOULD ENHANCE EXPORTS TO LATIN AMERICA,SAYS MATRADE

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 3 (Bernama) -- Malaysian companies are urged to devise a long term marketing plan and devote enough resources to enhance exports to Latin America.

The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) in a statement on Monday said Malaysian companies should enhance their market share now while the market in the region is still a green field.

MATRADE said the efforts can be intensified by collaborating with competent traders in Malaysia for consolidation of shipments and approaching the MATRADE offices in Miami, Mexico city, Sao Paulo, Santiago and Buenos Aires for export assistance.

The Malaysian Trade Commissioner at the MATRADE office in Miami, the United States, Jonathan Rao said the country's exports to the region in value terms is relatively small, but growing with the range of exportable products having shown diversification.

"Latin America is an attractive marketplace and offers great potential for Malaysian exporters in their quest to find new markets and now is the opportune time," he added.

Besides merchandise exports, Rao said there is big scope for Malaysian services providers to export their expertise and capabilities in areas of construction, professional services, logistics, ICT, power generation, oil and gas, among others, in the various developmental projects earmarked on by the governments of the Latin American countries.

"For instance, the Ministry of Transportation in Colombia has unveiled its Public Works Plan known as the "Infrastructure Program for Prosperity 2011-2021"," he said, adding, the 10-year plan involves infrastructure projects worth about US$56.5 billion.
